Holter monitoring – what is it?

Klinika Baltija offers its patients innovation in comprehensive heart rhythm testing. Holter monitoring is the study of the heart rhythm (recording of the electrocardiogram) and analysis during the day.

With a conventional electrocardiogram, the heart rhythm (and other possible abnormalities) is only monitored for a very short period of time – usually 12-15 seconds, sometimes 15-30 seconds. Rhythm disturbances are not always detected in such a short period of time, especially if they occur at the wrong time and are of an epileptic nature.

The Holter monitoring available at Klinika Baltija can help to detect these diseases or conditions:

  • Changes in heart rate during the day;
  • causes of frequent or infrequent heartbeats;
  • various rhythm disorders;
  • the number of heart beats (extrasystoles) per day;
  • life-threatening conditions such as ventricular rhythm disturbances or cardiac conduction disturbances (e.g. atrioventricular block), which need to be treated as soon as possible, not only with medication, but also, in many cases, with a pacemaker implantation or ablation procedure;
  • the device detects and records changes in respiratory rate during the day and is able to detect episodes of respiratory arrest during sleep (sleep apnoea).

How is the test performed?

  • The test involves attaching 3 sticker electrodes to the patient’s chest, which are connected to a small and handy (less than 150 g) special machine. It is hung around the neck like a pendant. The patient wears the device around the clock. It is then removed, connected to a computer and the recorded data is analysed by an experienced cardiologist using a special programme.
  • The analysis of the Holter test allows the precise diagnosis of the disease and the appropriate treatment 🩺 to be prescribed for the individual patient, thus minimising the risk of side effects and maximising the effect of treatment. The duration of the test is 24 or 48 hours.
  • The test can also be performed without a cardiologist’s consultation, which is scheduled according to the patient’s needs and preferences. The test can also be carried out after a cardiologist’s consultation at other medical institutions.
  • The cost of Holter monitoring for 24 hours is €70. The price includes the analysis of the test, which is carried out by an experienced cardiologist working in Kaunas Clinics.
  • The Holter monitoring device used at the clinic is professional and the results of the test performed with this device are recognised by any other medical institution, so you will not have to repeat the test at another medical institution.
  • The results of the test can be sent to the patient’s e-mail, and the analysed test can be picked up at Klinika Baltija in both paper and digital formats.
